I seem to notice of late that a lot of the lounge furniture is leaning to the more traditional styling having buttons and chesterfield type styling.

Many Designers are using them to accesorize their fabulous designs. Although they are mainly used as very durable rugs to compliment any decor, some people do have them as wall dressings, which can look absolutely outstanding as a design feature.

They come in many different colourways, black & white / brown / tricolour / exotics / tan, remembering that although some may be similar all hides are totally individual.

Leather is Leather isn't it????

It is but there are different types of finished leather and each are suited to different purposes.

FULLY ANILINE LEATHER
The leather in its most natural form, will have little or no protection. Imperfections, blemishes and variations in shading will all be clearly visible with a velvety soft finish, feeling very luxurious. It is more susceptible to absorbing liquids and will also mark more easily. Hides are dyed to create natural variation in colour throughout the hide making each hide have unique colouring and shading therefore giving each piece of furniture, in effect, a “one-off” feel.

NUBUCK
This is a type of Fully Aniline Leather which has had its surface brushed to create a velvety feel. This process does makes the surface more absorbent than the fully aniline finish, so greater care is needed when having this finish on your furniture.

SEMI-ANILINE LEATHER
As with Fully Aniline Leather a dye is applied to the hide, enhancing the natural look of the markings, blemishes and imperfections. The Hide is then given a thin finishing layer giving some protection to the finished hide. The leather will also natural, soft and luxurious but has the added advantage of a protective finish. It is a great compromise for those that would like a “Natural looking leather” with the great benefits of protection on their furniture.

CORRECTED FULL GRAIN / PIGMENTED LEATHER
The most durable and easily maintained of all the leather finishes. The original hide goes through many processes to achieve its uniform and consistency of colour. It is then sealed and embossed with an artificial grain print to give the easily wiped surface. There is a great range of colours available in this finish as they are manufactured colours with none of the original grain or imperfections coming through. The embossing, depending on range of finish, could go from quite smooth to a more raised grain feel.

RUB OFF (ANTIQUED)
This is a corrected Full Grain leather which then has a darker topcoat applied. This topcoat is then “Rubbed Off”, when upholstered, to give an instant ageing effect. This type of finish suits more traditional pieces such as Chesterfields and Queen Anne chairs. It does, with time and use, age a little more and this will obviously change the finish over its used life.

Hope this helps you understand the differences in each of the different finishes.

Sofa blamed for car crashes!

Five cars were involved in a number of separate collisions in Perthshire after reports of a sofa in the road.

No-one was injured but one car had to be towed away following a collision on the westbound carriageway of the A90 near Longforgan.

A Tayside Police spokesman said: "There were reports of a settee lying on the carriageway prior to these collisions and an investigation had been launched."

Forest Brown
is a heavily distressed and oily type of leather. Extra fat liquors are applied during tanning, to give the leather a slightly damp and oily finish. Additionally the leather is tanned in such a way as to highlight the natural marks and scars found in the hide. Marks are treated to darken them, so that they show clearly through to the topcoat.

Like all Pull-Up leathers, Forest Brown will not have a consistent colour density across the whole hide and is designed to change colour when pulled or stretched. This means that furniture will have a much more relaxed and aged look from new.

Winston Churchill's Chesterfield fetches £7500

The late-19th Century Chesterfield is thought to have been in Churchill's private Whitehall offices during his second premiership from 1951 to 1955.
It was found during a routine house clearance by Auctioneers from Northamptonshire.
The 8ft (2.4m) leather button-back, scroll-arm Chesterfield Sofa was nearly discarded in a skip until the brother of the late owner mentioned the connection.
Auctioneer Jonathan Humbert said the link directly to Churchill had not been proven officially, but the settee was given as a gift to a friend of Churchill's who then passed it on to the most recent owner.
It originally had an estimated value of £50-80, as it needs so much restoration.
It attracted worldwide interest at the sale and finally sold to a client in South Africa.

Darlings Helping Schools in Ghana

Darlings of Chelsea donated a cowhide rug to company Barry Callebaut makers of fine cocoa chocolate products.
Barry Callebaut held a charity ball to raise money for schools in the cocoa growing regions of Ghana.
The total raised was £10,733.37 which will go toward improving schools facilities in their chosen areas.
